How to compare text with Notepad++

Sometimes I have to compare text, especially at work. I might want to find the differences within two text files containing code or regular text. One useful tool that you can use for doing this is Notepad++.

Notepad++ is one of the most versatile source code editors, used predominantly by developers, but also by many people in all sorts of professions.

What makes Notepad++ very handy and powerful is its Plugin Manager. You can download all sorts of plugins that can help you with your daily work and one of them is the Compare plugin, which allows you to compare text (or source code for that matter).

Therefore, after you install Notepad++ on your computer you need to install the Compare plugin from the Plugin Manager. You will then be asked to restart Notepad++.

The next steps for running a compare are as follows:

  1. Open the files, in Notepad++, you need to compare.
  2. Navigate to Plugins and then click on Compare.
  3. You will immediately get a split screen with the two files you are comparing, showing you the differences the two files have.

The tool is free for download from the Notepad++ website.
