Amazon has announced Amazon Key a few days ago and I am really wondering whether this is a step forward or not with where things are going.
As an Amazon (Prime) customer you will get the Amazon Key Kit, which includes a smart lock for your front door, a camera and the accompanying app. Once you install the kit (free installation) you will be ready to have your Amazon goods delivered to you without having to be at home.
The process seems simple enough. You shop from Amazon, then Amazon authorizes the scheduled delivery, turns on the supplied (cloud) camera and unlocks your front door. Once the delivery is complete you will be notified. You can actually watch the delivery live from the installed cloud camera or you can watch the recorded video clip later on.
All this is fine but what if something goes wrong and your door is left slightly open or the smart lock goes bust and it does not lock?
There is also an issue as to whether there is an intrusion to your privacy. Your home will become open for anyone to see and look into. I mean there is a convenience factor here, that you will get your things delivered with no hassle but is it really worth it? Would you actually let your home become Amazon’s playground for a slight convenience?
There is for sure a lot to think here and I will certainly think twice if I will ever opt for such a service.
